EFCC seeks media cooperation to tackle financial crime

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it needs media cooperation to wage a successful war against crime and criminality in the country.

The anti-graft organization made the plea while addressing members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, at the Warri Press Centre, Delta.

Acting Zonal Director Edo, Delta and Ondo, Effa Okim, while speaking on behalf of the EFCC delegation, stated that the fight against crime and criminality cannot be left in the hands of the EFCC alone.

He said the anti-graft body needed the cooperation of all Nigerians, of which the media is an integral part.

According to him, society would not be comfortable for everyone to live in if everyone folded his or her arms and allowed crime and criminality to flourish.

He said many youths in Nigeria are now committing crime with impunity because no one is checking them.

He added that the situation is worsening as many parents no longer keep a close eye on their children and wards.

“I know that fighting crime will not be easy, but with your cooperation it will be easy,” he assured, while warning parents to be optimistic in watching over their wards to avoid a bleak future.

“When I look at the way our children are behaving today, I wonder: where did we go wrong? Where have we gone in our culture?

“This means that someone is not playing their role. We need to restore our culture to keep things running smoothly,” he warned.

Okim instructed parents to warn their children to avoid crime and delinquency or to report to the police for a day if they are caught.
